So, back in 1995, I joined the National Guard and was afforded my first unit coin. Since it was a unit that had recently stood up, it was numbered under 100. The following year we became a toe unit instead of tda, and got our true unit designation along with, what else, but a new coin to go with it. These coins had been made in Korea and were what I like to refer to as pre-color or old fashioned. However, they are definitely two of the coins in my collection that will never be sold, and are priceless as far as I am concerned. They are worn, and look like they were carried in my pocket for years, because they were. Today my collection has grown to about thirty I have been awarded, and over 100 that I keep on my desk from various trades or purchases. I know many other soldiers that have a similar “set” of collections, one from award, and one from purchase.
So what coin was your first?
In comparison to other branches the NG is lacking the amount of coins on the market. Sure there are a lot but not by a good margin compared to the Air Force or Army. There could be several reasons for this, maybe one being that they are not all full time spots or the funding is not there. Even big minters like U.S. Challenge Coins .com have only produce 1-2 in the year 2007. So what’s it going to take to get the NG side of the house on par? Motivation?
You are the ones deploying the most to Iraq and other places to take on the war and yet there seems to be the lack of memories. I personally have such a high respect for the NG that I search out for those unique units to collect. Am I wrong about the rarity of these coins? If so I would like to know where they are hiding…
Well here we are finally. It’s time to get down and talk about what’s going on in the NG coin community. no one else is going to do it for you so we are stepping up to issue you that valuable information. Are you a collector? if so this site is going to be a very valuable tool for you to know what is new, where to find great coins, and maybe even some shooting the wind about the National Guard. Who knows…it’s a blog which means we can talk about anything, right? You bet and we plan on it.
