Everyone if you haven’t seen it yet, MilBid.com was born in February. This site is awesome! It’s free and supports the military. Unlike other places you actually talk with the head cheese and they listen. It’s not everyday you get a site wanting to give to the troops, as it is usually the other way around. You guys seriously need to lend a little support and spread the word on MilBid. This is going to be a rockin auction house for both buyers and sellers. We Are Getting Back

Bruce has been busier than ever. I as well. We hope everyone hasn’t forgotten about us. We are trying to get back in the saddle to talk about National Guard challenge coins. We have gotten our hands on some really awesome goodies lately which we will post shortly. Some of the nicest coins have hit the market in early 2008. We are also looking to take in other National Guard writers if you want to contribute on this blog. We will screen any writers that offer up as we know some might just take advantage of a free site to post whatever they want. We want real stuff collectors want to read and not just crap about some company wanting your business. Hang in there guys, we will be writing full time shortly.

Well, there are only so many places to acquire coins. Ebay happens to be one of the few, another is www.challengecoinauctions.com, and a variety of online stores. I like keeping an eye on each source and snap up unique shaped coins when they are on the market. Will put up another picture when they arrive. It would be nice to live near a post with a large amount of surplus stores that also had coins nearby, but that is just not the case for most of us in the National Guard.

So obviously I have bought many of the coins in my collection, the shaped coins and these being good examples, do they hold quite as much personal value, no, but I like coins from places I have been, units I have served with, fellow Ohio National Guard units, and the shaped coins, in this picture I have coins from our 73rd Troop Command, 737th Maintenance, 371st Support Group, 437th MPs and even one from the Connely program that is a contest for military cooks, I was in the chain above one of our units that participated in that program last year. Imagine Iron Chef with camo netting out in the woods……

Uniquely Shaped Coins

OK, are you a traditionalist, or do you also like coins with a shapely twist….? I find myself instantly liking coins of different shapes, although they do not hold the same personal draw as coins received for a purpose or unit, they hold an appeal through design and shape. What do you think?

Added another coin to my collection today

Well, this picture is of coins I was awarded, given, part of the unit, and such, includes coins that I received during promotion through the two I received when I got first place at Leapfest. A start to my collection, some that came from commanders, some from everywhere, and I think even one from my bank….these are the ones that are truly connected, and will never be fore sale or trade.

Had some fun today, showed around one of the coins I have to several military and former military people, the few civilians that saw it really did not understand it, but hey, everyone else got a good laugh……hope you do too.

Our New Battalion Coin

Well, tonight I discussed our new Battalion Coin with our officers….and we are waiting on one of the companies that is changing its mascot. By next month I might be able to post a pic of the artwork, and by March hopefully a picture of the actual coin. Interested in other people’s stories about making coins, and any helpful or hardship stories, high praise for laughter inducing stories….

Anyways, just like the army, hurry up and wait.
